Restoring with SBCON

I am running NW 6.6 using sbcon for backups. No problems. I tried to do a single file restore and was simply unable to decipher what the forms were asking for. The documentation was of no help. Can anybody help out by telling me exactly how to accomplish this cryptic process. BTW, being Novell, I did offer it a plate of liver which it chose to ignore

I've used SBCON successfully, but it is a clunker. I'm in the process of replacing it with BE 9.1.

Rather than write a 4 page dissertation on the quirks of SBCON, can you tell me exactly where you're getting lost?

I get lost on the Subsets Of What To Restore screen. The docs seem to allude to being able to point to directories and files which makes sense. I just wanted to restore one file and could not do it.

Your help is most appreciated!

Make sure you have all the Restore options set then goto Advanced Options. If you want to redirect the restore set that up under Rename Data Sets (which is another can of worms). To restore to the same place it was backed up from just goto Subsets to Restore.

At this point all selections should say 'Default'. Select 'Include Files' (an include is exclusive, nothing else will be restored). Selection List Options will popup with a blank list. Hit Insert (on the keyboard), select the Namespace (use LONG if you're unsure), then enter the full path of the file you want restored (where the file existed when it was backed up). EG,
VolumeName:/parent/child/file.ext
Since the target server was selected before you went into the Advanced Options you do not specify the server name.

Now hit Esc 4 or 5 times until you are asked if you want to submit the job and select Yes. The job will run pretty quickly on a single file restore, remember that SBCON doesn't refresh it's screens worth a **it and you usually have to exit a screen and reenter it to see a refresh.

I've tried following your instructions several times without luck. System reports it just can't do it. No error log to be found! Ugh! My test is restoring one file, a dummy file, to its original location, no rocket science here.

You're going to have to be much more specific. Are there job logs being created? What do they contain?

Can you post the full path to the file exactly as you enter it in SBCON?

Why don't you download a copy of BackupExec. You can download the full thing. Install the 30 day trial license. Use it, work with it a little. See what it can do for you. Find out how much easier it is than SBCON, and then realize that the $500 or so that it costs is a much better alternative than the pain you've been going through now.

Thanks to all that helped with this little problem. I was able to restore a test file using LawnBoys instructions. I have, however, downloaded a copy of BE and will look into using it.

Yeah, BE is so much easier to use. You are going to want the Open File Option, the NSS switch /FileCopyOnWrite is ignored by BE.
