After a HD failure and subsequent restore to a new HD from a ghost backup, SQL server 7.0 would not start due to an ID error. Had to uninstall and re-install SQL Server and then restore databases from a db backup. Is there any other way to do this without re-installing SQL Server?

You might be able to rebuild the master. Search for rebuild master in SQL Books online. Terry
