I have been following the instructions in kb article 824126.
First, I tried the method to manually copy the db files.
1) I restored the .edb and .stm files from backup.
2) I ran eseutil on those files to get them into a clean state and also did the offline defrag.
3) I've copied both files into \exchsvr\recovery storage group
That's where I get stuck. The docs simply say "mount the database". When I try to select the restored .edb file, I get an error back saying the file already exists.
Now I'm trying to restore from backup again, only this time I select the Exchange Information Store in the backup instead of the db files. My concern is, if I restore via this method, won't it restore over my existing Exchange store, basically causing me to lose all mail since the last backup?
In another thread, someone mentioned that the creation of the Recovery Storage Group causes the Restore operation to be "redirected" to the Recovery Group, and not the current, active store.
Sorry for the rambling - any clarification is appreciated.
Thanks
