We currently have an S8300 on a G700.

Below are the details:

The Software Version Web page displays the software version of the active partition of this server.

This system is currently down, we have recent backups of the OS, Security, and XLN files.

We are receyving an S8300D/G450 with CM 5.2.1.

Can we use existing backup files that are available from the old server and restore them to the new CM5.2.1?

What would be the steps, or tasks needed in order to make this work?

Thank you.

You will need cm5 license and authentication files from Avaya.

license will be cm5 RTU instead of cm4
serial number will change from your g700 to the new g450.

Configure the server manually with web browser
Then you can restore the xln from your backups
and restore the security files from your backups

You will have to reprogram the media-gateways in CM

What do you mean by "reprogram the media-gateways in CM" is this done from the web browser too?. What settings done I need to keep from the old media-gateway?.

Thank you

Command: list media-gateway
Command: change media-gateway
Command: list config media-gateway

all your station and trunk packs will need to be cleaned,
remove the g700 media-gateway, add a new g450 media-gateway

In order to remove, you must remove all translations, announcements, stations, trunks, or at least disassociate the ports so you can blank out the media-gateway packs and remove the g700, then add the g450, add the packs back, add stations, and trunks back.

Why is the system down?
Do you have the original license and auth file from the cm4 installation?
Do you have the cm4 iso image and patches?
Wouldn't it be easier to load cm4 on the newly arriving gear?
Did you purchase an upgrade to 5 as part of this restoration process?

The current system has a harddrive failure.

We will be getting a brand new S8300D on G450, cd drive and CM 5.2.1 installation media. Licenses upgrade to CM 5.2.1 was also included.

We will need to transfer licensing to the new server.

My main concern was the posibility to use the CM2 backup files to restore the configuration on a CM5.2.1 server.

Confused... Why are the backup files CM2 when what you showed is CM4?

This was a typo the backup files are CM4. the old system was running CM4.

Sorry about that.

make sense now. If this were me, I would get a new HD and re load CM4. Then restore from backup. Once the dust has settled from that, then I would consider the upgrade to CM5. Your approach with upgrading and HD replacement seems like a lot of moving parts to me. Keep it simple.

The approach to move on with a newer release we took was the one recommended by Avaya, since they do not offer any support/maintenance for the current failing hardware (6+ years old).
Avaya recommended to use this opportunity to replace with new hardware.

makes sense, but they might be recommending this as you are now paying for an upgrade from CM4 to CM5. With just replacing the HD and reloading CM4, you pay nothing. Assuming you have maintenance.

You can use an alternative hard drive. You just need to match the type (IDE or SATA) depending on if you are a S8300B or S8300C. Swap out the drive, reload the software and do a restore. I do this with my LAB system so I can run a variety of different configurations. You will need the USB CDROM drive that came with the system to do a reload. Unfortunately Avaya doesn't give you a USB Memory Stick software load process.

The upgrade was not a requirement however that would be Avaya's recommendation if you did not have maintenance. Since I am assuming Avaya or a Business Partner is going to do the install/upgrade you will want to look at the recent PCN's and insure they install the correct over-writable patch along with the latest kernel patch.

Gateway replacement was not a requirement either however the G450 is the moving forward hardware (this week). Why didn't they upgrade you to CM6.0? Did they at least provide you with Software Support Plus Upgrade (SS+U) so you will be able to go to 6.0? The 6.0 upgrade will be a complete reformat/restore of the system again so be prepared to have either Avaya or a Business Partner perform the work.

The 6.0 migration would also allow you to have Secure Access Link (SAL) on the S8300 for alarming to Avaya and/or your Business Partner.

The only thing you would be missing is the Co-Resident SES. It is not supported in CM6.0. This shouldn't be a significant drawback unless you are using a number of third party SIP endpoints. All the Avaya endpoints can be supported with H.323 (without losing features).

There are a significant number of new features you will pickup by going to 5.2.x so it is not a waste. You will also get RTU for UC so if you have the time/money for some additional servers you can roll out some really nice products (one-X Mobile, one-X Portal, Presence, VPN Phone, etc.). Have fun...

The reason he was upgraded to CM5, is because CM4 does not support the G450 media gateway, that was first released with CM5.

You can restore the CM4 translation to a newly loaded CM5 system, however, as has been stated, you will need to "X" out all of the pports in use, remove any members from trunk groups, turn off TTI, etc, so that you can remove the "old" gateway. You will then have to add in the new media gateway, and install the MM cards, and manually put all the ports back in.

You could have found a used/refurbed G700, that would have been your lowest cost option. Then you would do a "gateway serial #" swapout, and you would have been going again. Of course AVAYA or a Business Partner is not going to recomend that to you, no money in it for them, and it doesn't get you updated to the current hardware either.
