restore samba

I needed to restore samba to another machine and I am having a n issue where peoples profiles are not correct, permissions are not working and in the security settings on a Windows share the user names that should have rights are listed as long CSLID looking things. The users can login with there username and password but the profiles and permissions are screwed up?

What happened, and what exactly did you do? More info please.

We were trying to migrate to a new server but when samba came up and users started to login the windows machines created new profiles on the machines (ie) test became test.000 and permissions were lost as well.
