Restore runs very slowly, unless restore corrupt files set

I have some old archived DLTIV tapes that I am restoring to Win2k via backup exec. The restore runs at about 500kb to 1Mb per second if I run it normally, but if I set the "restore corrupt files" option, then it restores at 6-7MB per second.
