Hi,

How can one restore the data that was saved with the tapecopy command? Can it be done using the Arcserve gui?

Thanks,
Michael

Not sure what is really going on.
Tapecopy copies data from one tape to another or with the later versions from one File System Device or Tape to another.

So what is the big deal merge the tape in and do a restore.

The big deal is that you have the know on which tape the data is which you want to restore. If you work with tape libraries this might be difficult. I want to use the tapecopy command to set up a staging strategie. So everytime data has to be restored I have import the corresponding tapes? This seems to be a bit complicated.

I still do not understand. After a tapecopy the data is the same on both tapes (unless you use the append) so it does not matter which tape you use they both have the data and you can restore from either one.

I'm really bad at guessing games. Most user's I've dealt with use GFS, and so the tape names tells you the date of the backup and the type of job.

Are all your tapes using the same name? Some users just use custom jobs with the tape name * and append and keep appending. They end up with a whole bunch of tapes with the same name and like you said have no idea on what tape the data they want resides.

So I can only guess but it seems like the solution is to reconfigure the jobs.

Oh and by the way the Restore windows gives you a data view so you don't need to know the tape name it will automaticly pick the right tape when you select the data. If the tape is not in the drive it will tell you which tape it wants.

OK, I try to make myself clear. I am backing up data to virtual media on a hard disk and then use the tapecopy commamd to transfer the data to a tape library. The virtual media on the hard disk have to be overwritten daily (not enough space for a whole week). If you overwrite the virtual media on the hard disk you won't be able to restore the data using the restore the command. As you have pointed out correctly one has to merge the real tapes in the library first. Then, if I have to restore data, lets say after a month, I have to find this special tape where my data is on and then I have to merge it first before I can restore data. I'd say that is not doable for biger companies with huges amounts of data. I was surprised somehow that Arcserve can't be used for a staging strategie and I still can't be believe it. So I am thinking that I must have missed something.

Ok now it makes sense.
First off ARCserve, BAB, & BEB are backup/restore products. Backup to FSD File System Device is faily new. It is just my opinion but it is a case were what is obvious to the users was unknown to the developers. Real life users what to use the FSD feature just like you describe and it is only that tapecopy just happened to work with it that the whole staging thing works.

Anyways to the problem. Well you are not missing something ARCserve does not deal with it directly.
Here are a few ideas maybe one will work for you.
You can format the tapes with the date and then use the tapecopy append option to maintain the date.
Move the date for prunning farther back than 30 days.
Retain summary information only.
