Hi. I have just installed 2003 and i am having problems with my DNS install. I have two network cards, one is "public" and one is "private". the public one is completely assigned by my ISP. the private one is satic and in th 192.168.1.0 to .100 range.
When I install my DNS server, my server host computer resoves to 2 differnet "host" ip addresses, host (a) is both the public 68.46.220.17 and private 192.168.1.15 IP addresses. I think this is the reason i am having DNS resolution problems when i run netdiag.
This speaks to a greater problem i am having of separating my private network from my gateway to the internet via my public card. I think i am missing a basic concept here and would appreciate any advice.
For what it is worth, My public IP is:
DHCP No
IP: 68.46.220.17
GW: 68.46.220.1
DNS: 68.63.80.5
My private network card is:
DHCP No
IP: 192.168.1.15
GW: left blank <---- not sure what to put here
DNS: 192.168.1.15
This is the gateway computer that allows other computers to receive public (internet) network services.
My questions are this:
1) what should i be putting for the GW in my private card?
2) should my dns and my IP be the same on my private card?
3) I am told that my configuration should be static for both public and private cards, this means DHCP is turned off in both cases, is that ok?
4) how do i avoid the dns server from pulling the public IP address for Host(A) Forward Lookup Zones... I am assuming i want the privately assigned network IP and not the ISP assined IP address there.
Sorry for the long winded question... responses seriously appreciated. THanks in advance.
