I've just inherited our Meridian 1 option 11 system, so I'm a newbie at this. Everytime we have a power glitch I've got to reset the date and time. Does this system have any kind of internal battery backup? Also this system is at another location, how hard is it to setup a modem to dial into and use hyperterminal?

no the time can't have a int battery for that purpose, if it's and opt 11 a pc style ups will keep it up for an hour or so. and it's very easy to put a modem on your switch, normal dial in is 8 none one and 9600. but that can be changed. hyperterm will work although most voice techs use pc anywhere because of shortcuts that can automate almost any task, for instance, dialing in a midnight and reseting the clock to midnight..
