Does anyone know what happens at the various levels of Reset 1-5 I know 1 is soft and 5 is hard power down but what happens within the system and what benefits do each have?
Rel 9.5 Definity. I am looking for a not to techy description along the lines of " Reboot 3 causes mininimum service loss while clearing out any temp files"
This is to be communicated to non Telecommspeople in a language that they can understand.
Reset System 1 (System Warm Start)
This recovery takes about 30 seconds. All stable phone calls remain up. In-progress calls are dropped. No new calls can be made during this time.
Reset System 2 (System Cold Start Without Translations Loading)
All Port circuit packs are reset. All telephone sessions are dropped. Telephones begin to reconnect to the switch within 30 seconds. In a large system, reconnection of all telephones may take up to five minutes. In this restart, all software (Oryx/Pecos, drivers, maintenance, and so forth) is reset. In addition, the TDM Bus and all port circuit packs are reset.
Reset System 3 (System Cold Start With Translations Loading)
Emergency Transfer is invoked. Translations reload from translation card. Depending on the translations, the reloading process could take from five to 30 seconds. Thereafter, all port circuit packs are reset, and all telephone sessions drop. Telephones begin to reconnect to the switch within 30 seconds. In a large system, reconnection of all telephones may take up to five minutes.
Reset System 4 (System Reboot)
Emergency Transfer is invoked. The boot image is already in the flash ROM memory. The system reboots immediately after the LMM performs a series of diagnostics on the processor and memory. Translations reload from the translation card. Depending on the translation, the reloading process takes from five to 30 seconds. Thereafter, all port circuit packs are reset, and all telephone sessions drop. Telephones begin to reconnect to the switch within 30 seconds. In a large system, reconnection of all telephones may take up to five minutes.
Reset System 5 (System Reboot and Run All 24-Hour Tests)
Emergency Transfer is invoked. The LMM performs a series of diagnostics on the processor, on memory, and on memory card. Some diagnostics perform twice. This takes less than three minutes. The boot image is already in the flash ROM memory. The system reboots immediately after the LMM performs a series of diagnostics on the processor and
memory. Finally, scheduled maintenance is initiated.
When the system is rebooted or reset at level 2, 3, 4, or 5, all voice terminal and attendant console features are adversely affected. Users should be advised of services that are lost and that, as a result, must be reactivated. See “Removing Power” in Chapter 5, ‘‘Routine Maintenance Procedures’’.
I do not know of any benefits to doing a reset. The only reset that has any benefit is reset system I or interchange. I have done a couple of reset system 2's in the last 10 years and 1 reset system 4. These were done to resolve problems that the switch had. Unless you are doing a software upgrade of several vintages at a time, or you have some thing hung up in the switch, I would not use those commands. They will be service affecting, at least to some degree. I have done a reset 2 and the software upgraded the reset to a reset system 3 so be careful.
