Am new to SQL and have just tried to install 7.0... got a message stating that I cannot install the full version "from this CD" although it's the complete product. Do I need to have server installed instead of just workstation?

Correct. You are only provided the "client tools" for SQL Server if you are not installing the application on a true server.
