When I try to sign onto my XP (Home not PRO) I receive a LOG ON MESSAGE saying The system could not log on. I click on OK, the message window disappears and the grayed LOG ON TO WINDOWS box becomes active. It displays my user name and a blank line to enter my password. I don't enter anything but I click OK. That window disappears and I continue to boot up fine.
When I check the BIOS it shows NO PASSWORD ENABLED for the user account (me), the Administrator account or for the system itself.
If I go to the USER ACCOUNTS the box is not checked for USERS MUST ENTER A USER NAME AND PASSWORD TO USE THE COMPUTER. I tried checking the box so I could high light my user name, uncheck the box and click OK. Then the AUTOMATICALLY LOG ON box appeared asking for a password to ignore. When I supplied one, thee next time I booted up it stopped at WINDOWS IS STARTING UP. The only way to get around that is to bring it up in SAFE mode and go to RESTORE. Can anyone explain what is happening?

run malwarebytes, a good virus check, and ccleaner reg cleaner. Ignore anything in the BIOS, those passwords have nothing to do with windows. After running the software checks, may have to do a repair install of windows.

Besides the likelihood of Malware other things to consider are a corrupt profile or file corruptions. If you are surfing the Net as an Administrator then the chances are that any Malware you might encounter will have machine wide access as opposed to limited access if you were a Limited User while surfing.

I see lots of recommendations here for programs like -

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

SuperAntispyware

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Try it first by not checking either box (this will run it in a Read-only mode) to see if it flags any hard drive or file problems. If it does, restart it by ticking both boxes, and rerun it to allow it to attempt to fix any found problems.
