Hello,
I replaced my Heatsink to a Global Win BK II58 and now my PC will not boot,

THe fans all work and all the power seems to be there but the monitor will not come on and there are no beebs coming from the speaker.

Motherboard is ASUS KT266A
CPU: Athlon XP 1800

I have tried reseating everything including the CPU but to no avail Please help

Check the CPU for mechanical damaging. If you have installed a new radiator without due accuracy, you could damage the processor. In that case accept my condolences to your processor.

THe CPU does not appear in any way damaged, indeed the thing didn't get particularly hot at the time.

?

"the thing didn't get particularly hot at the time"
Did you run it at all without a heatsink/fan? an athlon will last about 20 seconds (if you are lucky) without an HSF. Also it is exremely easy to damage an athlon when installing an HSF as the core is exposed, a tiny chip or virtually invisible crack is enough to kill it. All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

NO, did not run this without Heat sink and was very careful to make sure it was attached properly.

The shop that sold it advised me to take the motherboard out as it may have warped slightly and just power it up with the case speaker attached,so I will have to try that and then I dont know.

Many thanks

Yes, unfortunately it is also easy to damage a motherboard when installing anything, sometimes only takes the slightest flex to crack something vital and however careful you are there will always be some flex.. best of luck All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

you did plug the fan into the motherboard in the CPU fan socket right?

Check to make sure all the power plugs and cable plugs are still tight and connected. I have seen just installing a modem or a NIC can damage the power supply. Sometimes the power supply will still come on and have power but not enough to run the system. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

Tried it all to no avail, AMD say it will be either the motherboard or CPu so tomorrow I am taking them back to the guys that sold the heatsink for testing.

I will let you know the results if anyone is interested,

Cheers

Have you actually removed the processor and checked for burning underneath the core???
If the CPU has burnt out there is usually some visible burning marks on the pin side of the processor.
Martin Please let members know if there advice has helped any.

And if it is burnt out! the reason usually is that the heatsink was fitted 180degrees out so not sitting squarely on the core. Martin Please let members know if there advice has helped any.

Do you have a good quality thermal paste applied to the heatsink? If not try getting some artic silver or coolermaster grease.

Looking at the underside of the CPU, 1 of the pins looks a little brown (whilst the others all silver) So you are probably right on the CPU burnout, but I am not sure how I did it though, I possibly put the heatsink on at an angle whilst clipping it in so maybe that is where it all went wrong,

Taking it all to the retailer for testing later.,

Regards

I took the CPU and Motherboard back to the shop, (CCL Computers in Leeds, UK).

They tested and came back out and told me that both the mobo and CPU had gone but the heatsink was OK.

I asked why if the CPU had gone, this had affected the mobo and I got the answer ' they just go'!!!

Now I am well frustrated at having to spend more money on CPU and MObo just because I wanted a quieter Heatsink.

NOt happy.

Well neither the Asus motherboard or the XP1800+ processor can be over 9 months old, so take them back to the original supplier!
AND DON'T GET FOBBED OFF! if they have "just gone" then they can be "just replaced" under warranty.
Don't leave the shop untill they at least agree to return them to the importers for warranty assesment. Martin Please let members know if there advice has helped any.

A motherboard shorting out will often take the CPU with it, also on occasion other components. Like Martin says, they must still be under warranty so go for it. All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

Aye, don't accept any rubbish. You have consumer rights and if its under 12 months they should repair it or replace it with an equivalent.

Thanks for all the advice, the only problem is that I bought all this kit from different suppliers and cannot now find the receipts ..

Lesson learned methinks.

Regards

Still it's worth seeing if they will trust you, a lot of suppliers are good and will do.

Receipts or no receipts, walk into your local (relevant) hardware retailers and start screamin' bloody murder ya flamin' pillock. This gear is only 9 months old, distributors will send it back to the manufacturers and get a full refund! Good luck laddy.
