Steps I've used to repair badly infected XP operating systems.
Step 1 ->Boot using an updated Hiren's Boot CD. Run 'Antivirus Tools' from the Menu that displays. Run FULL scans with all virus-removal tools listed.
Step 2 ->Enter 'Safe Mode Using Networking' (Usually by repeatedly pressing F8 or F1 during the BIOS process, when your computer lists what BIOS version it is), update your anti-virus and spyware removal tools & run full system scans.
**Note: Certain removal tools such as Spybot Search & Destroy, require them to run upon the next boot up...ALLOW them to do so.
****Note: HijackThis is an excellent tool in diagnosing and removing malware, but be warned - it is not the most user-friendly program available. You may want to list your findings on a tech forum, and let more experienced techs guide you through any removals.
Step 3 ->After you're convinced all viruses/malware are off the computer, boot normally and run the "System File Checker" Utility by going to "Start"; "Run"; type 'sfc /runnow' in the 'Open' Box, and click 'OK' **Note** You will need your XP OS Disk to complete this process.
Step 4 ->Update and run a registry tweaking tool such as TweakNow Registry Cleaner ->
-
-Remove all temporary internet files, cookies, and restore Internet Options to their default properties.
-Disable System Restore
Step 5 ->Download any available Microsoft Updates and install them. Pay particular attention to the ones associated with security.
Step 6 ->Disconnect from your internet connection, and run a disk degragmenting utility, such as the one supplied by the Windows OS or a free program from download.com.
Step 7 ->STOP IT FROM HAPPENING AGAIN! Use the tools in the link below to rid yourself of malware, or at least give you a fighting chance against it.
Hope this helps.
