Repair is causing Access97 to corrupt

I am running into a problem with many of the Access 97 databases that I manage. I am finding when I run the ACcess97 Repair utility, the database becomes corrupted. The same thing is happening when I use Access' Compact utility. The size of the database does not appear to be an issue. I have one that is over 21M and one that is less than 1M and it happens to both of them. Any suggestions?
