Here is my issue. I am preparing to add three servers this summer to replace a desparately overloaded Netfinity 5500. This 5500 is our DC, File Server, Print Server, etc. it is the File server issue I want to address.

A problem I see on the horizon is...I belive that if I move all the user files from this 5500(FILE1) to the new server (FILE2) my users are going to lose all of their links within their Excel documents. I think if I move the files to "FILE2" the links will not match up because (prior to my arrival) the users accessed all network files through shares not mapped drives. So if the link is looking for \\FILE1\excel.xls it will not find it versus looking for g:/mydocs/excel.xls. There are still some shares like this but they are slowly being removed.

Is there a way to change these links "en masse" so I can give the new server the new name(FILE2)? Or would the best solution be to name the new server with the old name (FILE1)?

Hope this has made sense.

thanks for the help!

David

Ive just gone through this...in our setup it was a no brainer to just rename the new server to the same as the old one.

Thanks for the response, ETID. I figured that was going to be the solution but I really wanted to rename this server. It has been around a while and has "NT" in its name. since we have gone to 2K I wanted to lose the NT reference, but I guess we'll just keep it.

While Excel won't have any trouble with its links, you may well encounter problems with any Word documents linked to the Excel files, since Word won't recognise the new path.

If so, you'll have to update the links in the Word files. If there are many such links to update, you may find the utility at:
helpful.
