renaming computers on a domain - win2k pro os

i am trying to rename all of the company computers on our domain and am finding that with some of the win2k pro machines i am unable to do this..errors include "conflicting credentials on the domain" or "account does not exist on domain".. i've checked all the settings and they appear to be correct and i have managed to rename some of them successfully...any ideas?? would be grateful for any help

remove them from the domain (put them in a workgroup with a different name than your domain name)
then rename the machine to the new name,
reboot, log on locally,
& then you will be able to add the PC to the domain ... ---------------------------------------------------------------------
