Renaming AD and DNS?

Lately I have been running in to Active directory PDC's that are for internal use, and have been named with the .com extention, instead of .local (testdomain.com even though we have no chance of being live on the internet)

I am under the impression this is a bad idea, because it tricks dns in to believing it is a root server?

Anyway, my question is this. How do I rename Active Directory, and change it to testdomain.local? I have searching the KB a few times, and to no avail. Thanks in advance.

You don't. You'll have to demote the server and then re-promote it with the new DNS domain name.

Having a AD with a .com domain is not a very critical issue, providing you keep your internal DNS records and zones internal. If you never, ever (unlikely given the business structure today) plan to be connected then that name doesn't matter. If you wake up one morning and decide to put the network on the Internet, you would need to either register that domain name, or demote and rebuild the AD again. Spend the $15.00 and register a name, then use that for your AD root. Fish
