We've had occasion to rename one of our WINS servers. Before renaming the box we removed the WINS role and then reinstalled it after. However on accessing the WINS MMC snapin we receive a "Access is denied. To modify WINS configuration you must be a member of the WINS administrators or be an administrator on this server" , additionally the old server name is still shown in the WINS snapin.

I've tried to find where this information might reside and retained , Registry etc can it is nowhere to be found.

The server is running Server 2003 SP1 (R2). The box is also a domain controller, dhcp and DNS server.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks in advance

Can you open a fresh MMC and add the WINS snapin to it and then add the new servername to the admin pane? Get rid of the old name from within the snapin?

Or you could try uninstalling WINS, deleting the WINS directory from system32 and then reinstalling. I think some settings were left behind in the files and were reassumed when you reinstalled.

Thanks ShackDaddy!

That worked beautifully.
