In Win2k and ME if you have both a CD-ROM drive and a CD-RW installed they are both listed as "Compact Disc" in Explorer along with their drive letters and icon. Just for convenience I would like to change the name of one to CD-RW (or something like that) . I have not found a way to do this in the registry but that may still be possible. Anybody have any ideas. Not a major problem but I would like to make the change. Thank you

It's kinda tricky, but here's how to do it. In this example, the CD drive is E:

..you'll have to change it to the letter of your CD drive, and rename it to what you want the description to be.

Here goes:
**NOTE: E represents the drive letter in this example***

I have created a model .REG file that you can use:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\E]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\E\DefaultIcon]
@="D:\\WinNTSAV\\Apps\\DVDicon.exe,0"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\E\DefaultLabel]
@="Custom Drive Label"
NOTES:
1. Replace E with the drive letter you wish to customize. You may also add additional Drive Letter sub-keys.

2. If the file that you specify has more than one icon, replace 0 with the zero-based index of the icon.

3. The Custom Drive Label only works for Windows 2000.

4. Shutdown and restart your computer for the changes to become effective.

5. You may have to mount / dismount media in the drive before the change becomes effective.

There's your info..
Good luck!

Thank you. Worked OK after I figured out what I was really supposed to do. Is there a similar registry hack that will work in Windows ME?
Bob

Although listed to only work in Windows 2000 - it may be possible to do this in ME as well. It may even be the same procedure, but I wouldn't give WinME 20 min of my time..that OS is far too unstable for my taste. I wouldn't doubt that it would crash it, and you'd have to reinstall.

There may be a WinME forum here, but im not familiar with using this hack in ME...maybe someone else knows?

Use 2000 or XP instead..
:)

Pbxman,
I agree. But this is for a friend and so far we have been unable to convince him to change to 2000. Thanks for the information. I will try winME forum.
