Trying to rename a users profile, since we think it may be corrupt. Tried renaming it but kept getting sharing violation or disk in use. Have admin rights on the box so that is not an issue, machine is running windows xp sp2 also, also part of a windows 2003 domain.

thanks in advance

You've been doing this from a cold boot, the user in question has not logged on before you have?

Have you copied the profile elsewhere (as presumably you might want to retrieve some of its contents) - so you can try delete? And try delete from system properties, advanced tab, user profiles settings, highlight & delete button.

btw - is it a roaming profile or just a local one?

Thanks for the reply. It's a local profile, user has been using the laptop for a few weeks. Tried going thru system properties, but profile is greyed out.

also went into documents and settings, tried to originally rename the profile but couldn't get around the sharing error.

How about logging on locally - and/or in safe mode? (without networking).

You have got full permissions to the profile folder? (might be best to take ownership of it).

Tried logging on locally with the local admin account, didn't work either.

Was able to use Bart and rename the profile, that did the trick.

The user has admin rights on the box also, i had him log onto my laptop and i wasn't able to rename his profile either. Logged on with a test account we use for testing policies, (domain account) and i was able to rename and delete his. I'm wondering in XP SP2 a user with admin rights cannot modify another admins profile?

thanks again,
