Hello,

I have deleted the installed letters e.g. elegant letter, elegant fax etc. but I also want to remove several tabs from the 'New' document window and all the wizards.

Basically, when the user clicks 'New' document I want them to see only what they need to see and nothing else. Is there an easy way of doing this? I have tried to delet the wizards from the C:/.../Templates/1033 folder but their icons remain in the 'New...' document window.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Go into Tools -> Options -> file locations and change the user templates to where you have put the new templates

The location folder for my templates is:

C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

This folder contains only the templates that I have put together. I changed the workgroup templates to the same folder. But I'm still getting the icons for the Word templates and wizards. If you click on one, Word starts to go through the whole Install process so it seems that the actual file has been removed. Any ideas?

First do what "IhateXP" suggested and that is set up the directory for the location of your templates. Next, the tab headings (names) are all directory names for where these temaplates reside.

If you remove the directory (if it is still in the same path where your other templates are), then the tab will disappear.

Thanks Hasit but I have already been into Options and alter the User folder. The tabs that show up in the new window are all the usual Microsoft ones. I tried putting a new folder in (called Fish) but it didn't show up as a new tab in 'New...'

I think what I'm going to try next is creating a completely new folder outside of the Windows and Office folders and try having Word look in that.

Will let you know how I get on.

Thanks.

OK, here's what happened. When I changed the location that the User templates option pointed to, nothing changed. The templates I had created remained the same and the tabs were all the usual ones.

When I changed the folder that the Workgroup Templates option pointed to, all the templates that I had created disappeared from the 'New..' window except for the two that I had moved to the new folder, just as expected. However the new 'Fish' folder I had created didn't show up as a tab and all the usual Microsoft suspects were there.

What I suspect is that Word actually holds the information for the 'New...' window in several locations. Two of which I have access to (the Workgroup and User Template location options) and others I don't.

This is becoming more of a problem than I'd hoped but maybe you guys can help some more.

Thanks in advance.

Strange. What version of Word are you using? This functionality is the same for 97 and 2000, but I can't speak about the 2002/XP version

Run the setup program on the Office CD, this will bring up the Office Maintanance mode. Select to add/remove features. Click the plus next to Word, then the plus next to Wizards and templates. Change any of the items you want removed to 'Not Available', and then tell it to update.

Bingo!

Just the job.

Thanks Rythemton.

Just as a final note.

I did what rythemton suggested and it removed the Microsoft Templates and Wizards as expected (thanks Rythemton). However the new folder I had created in Templates STILL didn't show up in the 'New...' window.

On a hunch I put a letter template in that folder (it had been empty before) and (trumpet fanfare) the folder showed up! Obviously Microsoft think that an empty folder is an unused folder.

B. G. Strikes again. :-/

Thanks everyone for your help

The teplates folders is used for all of Office. If all you have are Word documents in a folder, then that folder is not going to show up in Excel. If you have nothing in the folder, then it's not going to show up in any Office program. It's just the way Office works.
