Hello,
I have a problem with my computer.I tried installing Norton Antivirus 2001 and it stopped responding half way thru the installation.I was forced to use ctrl+alt+del to end the task. Now the problem is that the installation is not complete and it wont uninstall or reinstall.I wanted to know if there is a way of manually removing the installation and all its components completely. Please help me as I need the anti virus.
Cheers

HI
1. You can restore the registry to a level just earlier to NOrton AV installation. For that.. do the following...
1. Restart you computer and hold the Ctrl KEY pressed all the time until the BOOT MENU CHOICES are available. Select the BOOT to DOS prompt. OR... restart the computer in DOS mode.
2. Now get into Windows directory. (Ex.. CD\WINDOWS)
3. type.. DIR SYSBCKUP\*.CAB
A list of CAB files will be show.. starting with RB(meaning Registry Bckup). Example RB001.CAB
Note the date and time of these CAB files. Now note down the file with the suitable date and time.. just before your Norton installation.
4. Now type the following
EXTRACT sysbckup\RBxxxx.CAB
where xxxx is the name of the noted file in above and press enter. You will be prompted for confirmation to overwrite some files. Say yes.
5. Restart your computer by power down and on OR ctrl+alt+del.
You must be back to square A.

2. You can reinstall the Norton once again and then use ControlPanel to uninstall if you need. Before uninstallation, close down any tray items related to the software.

Hope this helps :=)

Even easier.
Boot to DOS (method explained above).
At the c:\ prompt, type: scanreg
Select to "view backups".
Choose the one just prior to your Norton fiasco, and restore it.
Restart. Cheers,
Jim
