We are about to create some new Ghost images, previously we have not used sysprep and have just renamed the machine when joining it to the domain.

We were under the impression that this will generate a new SID, is this true?

If not can this have an impact on the application of GP?

Thanks.

Running Sysprep sets a few registry keys and after downloading the image, the first bootup a new sid will be generated. You will also be prompted for a workstation name, local administrator password and if the image was not constructed from a Select CD, a product key.

If you just want to resid the machine, there is a product called Newsid available from for free.

Thanks for the reply.

Our CD's are supposed to be select be it asks us for the product key each time (very annoying).

I will try the one from sysinternals.

ps do you know if having the same SID will affect group pols?

Thanks.

The same SID shouldn't (as far as I am aware) affect group policies.

The only time I have found it affects a real world network is if the network is hosted on windows 2000 servers. It makes no difference as far as I am aware with Novell networks & Zen or Windows NT servers and domains.
