Hi all, somehow my machine now has restrictions that do not all access to the Internet options entry of the Tool menu in IE5. Very annoying. It also has restrictions against changing the folder view options in Windows Explorer.

I have checked the registry and reset all the 'NoBrowserOptions' entries to (0) but no joy. This seems to have been inflicted by one of those idiot web pages that set their page as your home page. I can still acces the internet options by right clicking the IE desktop icon, but would like to have the Tools menu function fully again.

Any ideas ? please ... thanks

ray,

Do a search for NoFolderOptions and change it's value to 0.

thanks reghakr,
looked but its not there. Somehow this is getting set as a policy, but there are no policies in use. even tried creating some policies with these settings, then removing them hoping to clean out what was there, but no go.

man I'd reeeeaaaally like to meet the dink who did this to me. :D

If you have Win98 the easiest fix would be to restore the registry to a time before the problem started.

Start your computer and keep pressing F8 or hold down the ctrl key, and then choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only from the Windows 98 Startup menu. At the MS-DOS prompt, type cd\windows\command and then press ENTER. At the C: prompt, type scanreg /restore and then press ENTER. There's a space between the g and /. Then select a registry dated the day before the problem started and then press ENTER. NOTE: A properly working registry has the word "Started" next to the date. When you receive notification that you restored a properly working registry, press ENTER to restart your computer.

If Kento's suggestion doesn't work:

Do a search in the registry for a key named restrictions under the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer key and delete it. Then reboot your machine and add the key back and lock your homepage as described below.

Or search for the word policies and check the values for the number 1. The number 1 USUALLY indicates a restriction is in effect. Post back with your findings.

To prevent further problems,

Correct your home page to the one you prefer, then immediately do the following:

Backup the registry and/or export the following keys:
go to Start>Run, type regedit. Navigate to:
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet ExplorerRight-click on the Internet Explorer key, choose new>Key, name it Control Panel. Right-click on the Control Panel, chose new>DWORD value, name it Homepage. Right-click on Homepage, choose modify and type in the number 1.

This should lock your home page, so no other web site can change it.

Then navigate here and verify the homepage is correct:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
look for the Start Page entry.

Hi Kento, unfortunately the registry backups are well beyond the start of this problem, but a good point you made, its now in my journals for future reference, thanks for the tip.

Hi rehakr, heres what I did: locked the home page, and went to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer and deleted the 'NoBrowserOptions' entry, leaving only 'default' (no value set).

rebooted, and to my great delight, I HAVE MY TOOLS OPTIONS BACK!!!!! and I also have access to folder type settings again.

You have no idea how greatfull I am to you for this. For 3 months now I have tried allsorts to regain this.

You have made my day, nay month. Once again many many thanks, youre the best. :d :D :D
