We are running SBS 4.5 in a small business environment. We have DSL for our Internet connection, and are using a router with a built in firewall.

MS Proxy is active on the network, but is not needed for caching performance, user restrictions, or firewall. In fact, we have had trouble getting certain Internet resources such as updates. In sum, we would like to remove Proxy if possible.

When Proxy services are stopped on the server, the server can see the Internet just fine, but the clients cannot, even when the "use Proxy" is unchecked on the local Internet options.

What am I missing?

Few notes:

1. The DNS service is not installed nor active on the server.
2. WINS has not been configured
3. Enable IP forwarding IS on
4. We are using Exchange with SBS 4.5, so when we turn off Proxy, we will need to ensure that Exchange can continue to work.

I am new to this environment, so my impression is that some "basic" settings may not be active, so any guidance is appreciated.

Finally, I am comfortable with two stages:

1. Turn off Proxy and bypass it.
2. Uninstall Proxy

You must also uninstall the proxy clients on all nodes as well.
you will have to input the router's Lan IP in the gateway section of your TCP/IP setup on all nodes.
Turn IP forwarding off on the server.
That should let all nodes see the internet.

am I misunderstanding this....but

the proxy amongst other things allows other computers, not just the one connected to the dsl router, to connect to the internet.

if you take away the proxy, surely the other computers cant see the internet. ===============

How are DNS requests being handled?
With the proxy, it would handle all http dns requests made by the client. Without the proxy there, the DNS requests could be lost. Unless of course you have your ISPs DNS server specified on all your client machines. Or you can have your internal DNS server use the ISP DNS as a forwarder.

Just a thought

You have to be careful with De-installing things on SBS server. This is not the same as de-instaling and installing stuff in a regular server. SBS is tighly integrated with all the software. What I did in one of our clients was to disable the service and followed what Senoj mentioned above. In addition, make sure that the DNS . (root) Zone is deleted and that the DNS fowarder is pointing to your Provider DNS Server.
