You could edit the mmui.mv file to comment out the code that puts them in there, but a simpler, more goof-proof (and safer) way is to assign the button image paths to a "blank" image.
In your store (using Merchant admin) go to the Images section; just put in the path/name of an image that is blank. -----------------
