removing a portion of a REG_EXPAND_SZ value?

For me this is the question of the day. I am connecting to the wmi stdregprov. From the MS MSDN site, I can see examples of everything to do with creating,deleting, and so on.

What I would like to do is to edit the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment\Path Value and remove just a small portion of it through script. Would anyone have a suggestion on how to do this ?
