Can anyone help me real fast. I'm trying to remove one file from an existing tar file. I can get it to work in linux using the --delete option but not in Solaris 8. Can anyone help?

You wouldn't happen to have the gnu version of tar on your system do you? Check /usr/local/bin to see if it's there. It has the delete function and /usr/local/bin might not be first in your PATH. If it is in /usr/local/bin, use the full path name when issuing the command.

If it isn't, go to sunfreeware.com and download the binary.

How do I check the GNU Version of tar. There is nothing under /usr/local/bin.

Thanks for your quick reply.

If you don't have /usr/local/bin/tar, you just have the native version, not the gnu version.

go to click on the version of Solaris you have, scroll down the right side to tar, click on tar-1.13.19-sol<n>-spark-local.gz and download it.

gunzip it and then use pkgadd to install it. it installs in /usr/local.

Here is another link to gnu.org that explains how to use delete (which you probably already know from linux).
