Hi All,

Do any of you fine people how I can remove "Accessories" and "Startup" folders from "all programs" in XP2 for ALL users? I'm not having any luck, including looking thru GPEDIT. Thanks in advance.

Best Regards,
Todd

Torotech,

I assume that you have a MS network server.

You need admin privilage.

As administrator you can make modifications via the System Policy Editor. To run this application, select Start > Programs > AdministrativeTools(Common) > System Policy Editor.

Programs access is at this reg key location.

My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\

Apply policy after edit.

Hope This is what you need.

Thanks, but I only want this on three machines that have XP2, so I'd prefer to do it on those machines only. Is that possible?

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs

Delete the Accessories folder.

Startup folder is required for Windows to run properly and as such will not allow deletion.

You could look at the Security Permissions for the All Users Startup folder and see what setting a "Deny" permission on the Read permission might do?

How To Remove the Startup Folder

Startup Up Folder for All Users & Admin Same ??

Thanks. That worked for the "startup" folder, but I already deleted accessories in All users and default users..no luck. Log on as ANY new user and accessories shows up again.

What exactly worked on the Startup folder? Will the same thing work on Accessories?

There is a facility to remove Accessories via Add or Remove/ Windows Components, I wonder if that would do anything?

See if you can make a Profile with these folders as you want them and then use the following article to make that the Default Profile for new users.

HOW TO: Create a Custom Default User Profile (Q305709)

In addition to the 'All Users' folder in 'Documents and Settings' there's also a hidden 'Default User' folder. Any new users have this as their template, so you'll need to delete the 'Accessories' folder from there too.

Thanks. I already did that...no luck. Give it a try. I tried on two computers with deleting accessories in "administrator", "all users" and "default". Log on as someone else, and accessories reappears.

What about if that "someone else" already had a profile with Accesories in it? Have you tried a user with no existing profile?

Torotech,
Thanks, but I only want this on three machines that have XP2, so I'd prefer to do it on those machines only.
Remember you are networked, and as you have not applied this as a GPO or other policy some of these profile re-appearances will be driven by/through the profiles from the server.

You have a reason for wanting only these three machines to exhibit this behaviour.

Your responses are a bit terse,
i.e.Thanks. I already did that...no luck.
not positive what you did as there were several suggestions posted previous to this ressponse.

Did you follow linney's post about "Add or Remove/ Windows Components", if these programs are removed physically, I do not think that even in a server environ they would be downloaded from the server, but have not actually attempted this.
