Is there a way to remove the main menu from Excel?

 
Yes--Tools-->Customize
Click Toolbars tab,scroll to bottom of list
Remove check mark from Worksheet Menu Bar Frank kegley

hmmmmmmmm,, that does not work for me, It removes it, but then it pops right back up when I exit the customize box.

In my version of Excel (2000) removing the checkmark next to Worksheet Menu Bar does indeed remove the main menu...until you close the Customize dialog; then it re-appears.

Ron,

My guess is that there must be a menubar active/visible at all times. You can, of course, create your own menubar and replace the built-in one.

I worked this out by setting the enabled property of the menu bar to false on open, true on exit,

Nice solution! I'll have to remember that. Interesting that setting Enabled to False actually makes the menubar disappear.
