Remove Instant Messaging and collaboration

I am trying to upgrade our existing Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2003. I cannot seem to remove the Instant Messaging and Collaboration services. I try to remove via Add/Remove programs but am notified that I cannot unless all mailboxes are moved to a different server or there are no mail enabled accounts.

We have only the one server, and were not planning on using new hardware. Is this not possible?
