Dear All,

I am trying to strip extra characters from one field and add them (concatenate them) with/to another field, any ideas?

I have looked in the FAQ pages (searched on 'characters') no luck on that one!
All ideas welcome...

Thanks in advance.

Jim

Have a look at the Left function and the & operator.

Hope This Helps, PH.

Dear CaptainD,

Thank you for the replies, I will explain further:

I am responsible for a flat file database that has to be imported into a 'proper' system and some of the fields have too much data in them for the new system to cope with.

I am looking for a method of taking the extra part of a field (beyond the character limit of 18 in some cases) and putting it into another memo field in front of the existing Data in that field.
It would be be very nice too, if I could take the extra data from the end of a word that occurs before the character limit.
Once in the new system the display of the Data will allow me to re-concatenate the data so that it makes sense.
Thank you again for your time.

Jim

OK, have a look at the Mid and InStr function.

Since this is an "Access" forum I assume you are importing into Access.

What type of Database is the original?

How large are the fields in the original database and what type of data do they contain?

What type of field(s) are you trying to import it into?

How are you importing the data?

What have you tried?
