My PC was taking up to several minutes to display the desktop icons after booting. While playing around I tried IE 8 and then uninstalled. IE 7 then did not run. Several uninstalls and reinstalls and it ran with no toolbars and no favorites etc. I broke down and called MS and they ran me through a total uninstall, running several tools, getting IE 6 to run and then finally reinstalling IE 7.
IE 7 runs fine, no loss of favorites or cookies.
The big question is why is my desktop popping up in only a few seconds now? How do I recreate this on another PC?
MS had me run the Subnacl (spelling?) tool as part of the process.
Any ideas?

SubInAcl is the tool you mention. It is a tool that sets file access permissions for users.

It is hard to correlate your improved performance and anything you have described as being useful on other machines.

These are general performance increasing links which may be of use to you?

FAQ779-4784 may help.

Disable, not uninstall, any unused network adapters

Thanks,
I have tried the usual scans defrags msconfig etc. prior to this, and nothing helped. This is one for the books. Thanks for giving me the correct tool name and the explanation.

I do have a slowing PC at home, I will try any of the suggestions I have not run and then run the permissions tool as why not.
Thanks again
