Situation
I have been trying to setup the Windows 2000 backup on our server. Previously ArcServeIT for Windows NT Version 6.61 was used. The Operating System is Windows 2000. We are using an internal Echo tape drive.
Symptoms
Currently, every time the computer boots, an application popup informs us that the remote storage file service hung on starting (event 7022). I can't figure out why it is failing. After Windows is started, I can start it with no problems from Administrative Tools, Services.
Also, I cannot connect to the removable storage service. When I open the removable storage snap-in, it freezes with an hourglass in the icon. I also tried stopping the service, but the service will not stop--it just hangs.
I cannot backup to the tape drive. Now, it says it cannot connect to the removable storage service. I think it says that because the service is still trying to stop. If I were to reboot and get the service running again, the message says that it has to add the tape to the free pool. I cannot add the tape to the free pool since I cannot open removable storage. The backup message just sits on the screen trying to do something with the tape.
Do you have any ideas as to how I can fix these symptoms and setup the backup to successfully run?
What I tried
First, I had to install the driver for the tape drive. ArcServeIT did not need the driver, and I found that Windows did not have the driver installed.
Then, I tried to reinstall removable storage as listed in Microsoft's article Q316500.
I tried setting the remote storage services to not start automatically on booting. I still could not get the backup to start.
I dont' need the remote storage, and I didn't think the backup needed it. I can't get the backup to work with it or without it.
