Hi All,
I was hoping a storage expert out there could help me with a storage backup question. My removable drives are not recognized or lose data after they have been removed.
We have been running backup to LTO1 tapes and started moving to B2D. I'd like the drive to be removable for off-site storage for short periods of time. The duration would be a 2 week rotation. The setup is as follows.
Server is Windows 2003. Software is Backup Exec 11d. Drives are 750gig Seagate ES.2. The drives are housed in an external chassis connecting to a LSI 8-port U320 64bit PCI controller card via a 3gb multi-lane cable. The controller config is JBOD. The drives are in caddys and are hot-swappable. Each drive has it's own drive letter- B, I, J, K, etc.
There are 3 sets of drives that rotate weekly. All 3 sets share the drive letters, for example, set 1 Friday is drive letter J and set 3 Fri also uses drive letter J.
What I'm finding is if I go back a week, the data is either missing or the drive can't be found. I tried both basic and dynamic disks in Disk Manager. The option in Device Manager for "Optimized for Quick Removal is grayed out. I can not change it. I tried the reg edit under SCSI value Classpnp to 3, but that didn't work. BTW- dynamic disks work better, but I have to reactivate the drive manually, but I'm still sure it loses data after a week.
Is there anything I can do to have these drives act like a USB drive and be removable? Is there some disk management software that I should be using?
Today, I'm trying D2D2T to see how fast this can be accomplished.
Thanks for any advice you can give.
Vince

If anyone is wondering about the speed of B2D, the job time is cut in half for both backup and verify.
