I am looking to back up a Windows 2000 server that is offsite. It contains a SQL server and a small database that is updated daily. Could the 2000 server backup to a NB or backexec server at the end of the day via the net? Any way to have it dial a VPN connection? Also what might be a better solution NetBackup or BackupExec. The backup server is running Server 2003 with a tape drive. Thanks for any insight.

I think that would work - all you need to do is make sure that the VPN connection is up at the time the backup starts. You could write some sort of script for the Win2k server to connect & disconnect the VPN connection at the appropriate time.

Might be mighty slow though - depending on your connection of course.

Does setting a demmand dial vpn connection sound like a solution. When the connection is requested by the client it would automatically dial the connection. Also what software would work better NetBackup 5.0 or BackupExec 9.1

Sorry - Ive never used a demand dial VPN - but the Backups are initiated by the Media server (which would be at your central site) not the client server - so Im not sure that it would work.

As for software selection I cant see there being any advantage using NetBackup as you would only want 1 stream being passed through the VPN link, so I would use Backup Exec.
