Please help! This just started happening today. All mail sent to remote domains is extremely slow. If I send something to my Yahoo account, I see the message in the queue immediately, however, it takes about 15 minutes for the message to actually be delivered.

The only change I've made in the last 48 hours in the installation of GFI Mail Essentials (trial version). I have removed that software, however, I am still having problems.

Incomming mail is fine and internal mail is fine. It's just EXTREMELY slow sending out to remote domains.

I am not using a smart host. This is E2k running on Win 2k Server.

Thanks

could be DNS. are you using forwarders or the root servers?

Now I am unable to send to ANY external domains AT ALL. This started yesterday. Prior to yesterday, everything was fine. No DNS changes have been made. I haven't been able to send out email for a day and a half now. Anyone, please help!

definitely check DNS. I understand that no changes have been made but it needs to be done. are you forwarding out to your ISP for name resolution?

I can resolve MX records from the Exchange server using NSLOOKUP. I have an internal DNS server that is forwarding to my ISP's name server.

I went to configure smart host to relay through my ISP's SMTP server, however, they don't allow relaying until I request it, which I did, however, that's going to take some time... I'm at a loss!

When I view all of the queues, three or four (out of over 400) show active. The active queues only have one or two messages in them. hotmail.com shows 'retry' and it has 41 messages in it.

This is becoming increasingly frustrating!

well, if you're forwarding to your ISP for resolution then the problem may be there. try to flush the DNS cache and push the messages out...

I flushed the DNS cache (ipconfig/flushdns). Still having the same problem. Undable to email ANY external domains.

Well... I shelled out $245 and called Microsoft. They asked if I had installed Mail Essentials and when I replied yes, they told be about the problem w/ Mail Essentials and Microsoft SMTP.

I had to uninstall SMTP, reinstall it, then run a utility named smtpreinstall.exe to fix the problem.

Apparantly, you have to run Mail Essentials on a completely different box running IIS.
