Hi

I am trying to connect to a windows 2003 server from my xp pro machine using remote desktop, when I do I get the message "The client could not establish a connection to the remote computer". I have enabled Remote Desktop on the 2003 server and have put my self in as a user that is allowed to connect but im an administrator so shouldnt need to do this. I can connect to other xp machine fine, any ideas? cheers

Is the 2003 computer on the same local LAN as your XP machine?

Do you have 2003 RC1 on the server, or any security settings that might be blocking port 3389 (port used for RDP)?

There all on the local LAN I think it is 2003 rc1 i havn't installed any service pacs as with port 3389 if both machines are on one lan this shouldnt matter or should it?

Billy,

RC1 may have installed some new security features (I haven't had the time or guts to test it out yet since it was released, so I don't know the exact behavior.) There should be a new security configurator on the 2003 machine, though - you might turn it off if the computer is completely protected from outside networks, or make an exception for Remote Desktop.

You can also try the command 'portqry -n servername -e 3389' to see if the server is indeed listening on the correct port.

I can ping the server its a bit strange the erorr message comes up straight away when i press connect but when i try it with other machines and they have not been set up for remote desktop then it takes awhile to search and then tells me it cant connect? it has to be a security setting

This is the error message in event viewer, looked it up and it points to terminal services i thought you didnt need to do anything with terminal services to use remote destop?

Ive had a look but I dont have a terminal services server or I dont think I do. Should I need to do this to use remote desktop Its just the 2003 machine that is causing the problem so much for just ticking allow remote access box.
