I am attempting to access a machine via Remote Desktop to view security camera software from a remote location. When I try to open the software remotely, I get a message that says "Unsupported display mode, set display mode as 800x600, 24 bpp or higher. The display settings on that machine while logged on locally are as follows...Screen resolution = 1024x768 pixels, and Color Quality = Highest(32bit). However, while logged on via remote desktop, my display settings are as follows 1024x768 pixels, and Color Quality of Medium (16 bit). I figure that the color quality while connected remotely needs to be set to 32 bit, but the problem is that I don't have that option available. I am logged on remotely as Domain Administrator, but it seems as if the settings tab in my display properties are not able to be changed. Anyone know why? Also, the display settings of the Remote Desktop connection are set to true color (24bit). Can anyone help?

Expand the options tab of the Remote Desktop Connection window. Click on display and bring the screen size down a little.

This didn't seem to make a difference. Adjusting the screen size didn't enable me to change display settings on the remote machine. I think my problem is that Remote Desktop is only capable of a display setting of 24 bit or lower. The adapter on the remote machine is capable of either 16, or 32. So, when I attempt to connect via remote desktop at 24 bit, the remote adapter isn't capable of that, and Remote Desktop not being capable of 32, I think they are defaulting to 16, because that is the only setting they can "agree" on. Sound plausable? Not sure what I'm going to do about this. Maybe a different graphics card? Let Windows default drivers load? Not sure. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I just remoted in to a machine that is 32bb and I changed mine to 16. The display setting that you see in the remote desktop window is what you will see, not what the client is. If the program isnt allowing you to run it, I would think that it is a developer issue. What OS's?

Both XPpro SP2. If I try to change display properties remotely, I cannot. I only get the option for 16 bit (which is too low to run this particular program). If I'm physically at the machine, I can change to 32, but not 24.

There are no other display options to choose from? I have 15, 16, and 24.

I can change my Remote Desktop display properties to 24 bit, but what I can't do is change the remote machines display properties to 24. I think it is necessary, because Remote Desktop isn't capable of 32 bit. So, when I connect remotely at 24 bit, the remote machine isn't capable of that, so they default to 16 bit. I need at least 24 bit for the program to work. So I'm not sure what to do. The program works fine when you are physically at the machine, because the display properties are set to 32 bit. Once connected via remote desktop they are defaulting to 16 and they are unchangeable.

ARGH!!!! I finally found a way to get the remote machines display settings to match the Remote Desktop display settings, and when I connect remotely, the &*#@ing machine is still defaulting its display to 16 bit and won't allow me to change it!!! I'm out of guesses.

Does the application not run at all or is it just choppy?

Not at all. I get a message that says "Unsupported display mode, set display mode as 800x600, 24 bpp or higher. But it runs flawlessly while logged on locally.

Uhm...It's IRAS. It came as part of a security package with the camera's, that I believe is Honeywell? I didn't originally install it, the security people did. They have no insight as to what the problem is.

Is there any setting in Group Policy that you can play with?

"You can use this setting to set a limit on the color depth of any connection to a terminal server or Remote Desktop".

WOOHOO!!! Issue resolved!! The video card drivers that were installed were only giving me options of 16 or 32 bit while I was on the local machine. By uninstalling them and using Windows drivers I was able to see a setting of 24 bit. Then, thanks to linney's post, I poked around in Group Policy on the local machine (Computer config/Administrative Templated/Windows Components/Terminal Services/Limit Maximum Color Depth). I changed that to 24 bit and voila! I was able to get an actual 24 bit connection via Remote Desktop and run this godforsaken program! Thanks everyone!
