Does XP home edition support remote desktop connection? I have enabled it but still cannot connect over the WAN. I find articles that say it is not supported and articles that it is supported. I have downloaded msrdpcli.exe and the response is remoted desktop is already installed. I have forwarded the 3389 port on the router to the ip address of the PC. I have also tried to the other computer on my home network and connect not connect to that one either. Message says client cannot connect to remote computer or remote connections might not be enabled. Any suggestion would be helpfull. Thanks.

To use Remote Desktop, you need the following:

This feature allows remote control of your Windows XP Professional-based computer from another computer running Windows XP Professional or an earlier version of Windows.

A computer running Windows XP Professional ("remote" computer) with a connection to a Local Area Network or the Internet.

A second computer ("home" computer) with access to the Local Area Network via network connection, modem, or Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection. This computer must have Remote Desktop Connection, formerly called the Terminal Services client, installed.

Appropriate user accounts and permissions.

How to Use the Remote Desktop Feature of Windows XP Professional

Have a look at the System Properties/ Remote tab on both a Home and Pro machine. You will find that the Home machine has no mention of Remote Desktop.

You could try using NetMeeting as an alternative method.

What is the difference between Remote Desktop and Remote Assistance?

XP Home does not support acting as a Remote Desktop Host.
Only XP Professional allows this.

You can, as you can any Windows version, use the Remote Desktop client to contact a Windows XP Professional Host, or a Windows server running Terminal Services.

Is Remote Desktop available on Windows XP Home Edition?
A. No, however you can upgrade from Windows XP Home Edition to Windows XP Professional to get Remote Desktop. You can use Windows XP Home Edition as the client for accessing your Windows XP Professional computer running Remote Desktop.
