I've done some searching and want to be sure I'm on the right path. I want to log into one of my windows xp pro systems from outside the fire wall. FYI there are a total of 4 systems on the LAN.

I have:

1) Configured the firewall to forward port 3389 to destination system.
2) Enabled remote connections via the remote tab under my computer>properties.
3) Installed and configured Dynamic DNS through dyndns.com and can ping the URL associated with my account, and receive the correct public IP.

I still cannot connect to my system from outside the firewall. I assume it is a antivirus, spyware, personal firewall application that is preventing my connection. Any ideas as to what the problem may be?

To use Remote Desktop, you need the following:

A computer running Windows XP Professional ("remote" computer) with a connection to a Local Area Network or the Internet.
A second computer ("home" computer) with access to the Local Area Network via network connection, modem, or Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection. This computer must have Remote Desktop Connection, formerly called the Terminal Services client, installed.
Appropriate user accounts and permissions.

Thanks for the help. Based on your response, I'm guessing that I can't simply type in the Dynamic DNS url into the Remote Desktop Connection tool and connect?

Yes, you should be able to use the DDNS name, but it isn't really required - you could just as easily use the public IP address (it might change once in a while though).

I assume that this means that it you've tested & it does work from inside the firewall. First, make sure that your [host system] ISP does not block port 3389 RD connections. I don't know of any that do, but it's possible. If it works from inside, but not outside, it's simply a firewall configuration problem.

9 times out of 10 its not having the proper credentials. You have to have a user account on the remote computer that you are connecting to.

I had this problem also. I just downloaded the free version of Logmein and installed it on the computer I want to control remotely.

You could check to see if any firewall is blocking access to the Remote Desktop program or specifically, mstsc.exe?

It was an antivirus, spam filter, personal firewall application. These damn things are more hassle than help some days.

Thank you all.
