My friend is always screwing up his machine with viruses and is very computer illiterate. He lives 100 miles away and sometimes he drops his machine off for me to fix. I would like to setup a remote tunnel of sorts while I have it here with me.
I know how to use remote assitance but even that is too complicated for him since he dosn't use email from home. He has DSL with a dialup app to log on. I would like to make it so I can control his machine without any intervention from him other than loging on.

I need a direct link without any intervention from the other side. (click and connect)

Remote Desktop, you would need to know his IP address, username and password?

Remote Desktop is described in detail in the Help and Support program under this heading "Remote Desktop overview".

This may come in handy too if one of the machines is not XP.
