I'm guessing you really mean that you need to access a remote database. A datasource is just a pointer to the database and I'm not aware of any way for CF to access a remote datasource. To the best of my knowledge, a datasource can only be used by local applications and processes.

If you need to access a remote database, I think you're going to be limited to databases designed for network access such as MS SQL Server, Oracle, Sybase, etc.. In these cases, you would just create a datasource on your machine and supply the necessary connection information to the ODBC driver and then you'll be able to access the remote database.

If you want to do this with Access, I believe you can map a drive to the remote machine and create a local datasource that points to the database on the remote machine. This obviously means that you have to ensure the drive is always mapped or the datasource will become invalid.

colfusion 4.5 also has native drivers for oracle and such - no odbc then ;]
