I am getting the error ... An FTP error occured - cannot make connection to host.

I am trying to update a site and have had trouble doing it from behind a company firewall, so I am using a dialup connection. This works fine if I use IE and type in the FTP address and then overwrite the file with my updated version.

However this seems to miss the point of being able to do it with DW. It seems to me that it is somehow still trying to use the network internet access because it doesnt start the dialup.

Does DW have to be configured to use some certain way to dial up / connect to its remote server?

In my site setup it is configured to use:
Access: FTP
FTP host: ftp.axis-eng.org
and then the directory, login and password are all set

HELP

FTP host: ftp.axis-eng.org
sould read as
ftp://axis-eng.or

Thanks but

I am still getting... the remote host cannot be found, if I type ftp://ftp.axis-eng.org into IE it works fine??????

1) you may want to try JUST the site
-FTP
-axis-eng.or

2)also check the settings in IE
Tools-->Internet Options-->/Connections\ tab
make sure u NOW use only dialup...

3) and of curse that ur connected/dialed in before connecting....
4)u might ask your dial up provider if they have port 25 blocked
5) if u want to use LAN vs. dialup then have your admin open a port 25 OUTBOUND only on the firewall...and if he/she is paranoid about it then have just your IP.machine to be allowed the port 25 outbound...so u dont have to dial up

All the best!

I have made sure that IE is set to my default and that it is connected before I test my connection to the remote server.

At first it says Connecting to server....

and then An FTP error occured - cannot make connection to host. The remote host cannot be found

As I've said it will connect fine if I just type it into IE or into ACE FTP. I am struggling with trying to change that firewall settings, I dont think that is going to happen

Cheers

that would be port 21 for (5)...ops 25 was SMTP

Are you connecting via a router/ behind a firewall? If so your need to connect via passive ftp- check the box and try again with that

also you should be choosing FTP
then put in JUST the domain name, usually you don't have ftp. in front of it, try it both ways using passive ftp.

Sometimes, when my code just won't behave, I take it outside and make it listen to britney spears music, and when it comes back it's really well behaved. I wonder if it's suffering from post tramatic stress syndrome now..

Cheers that worked fine

It worked for a seperate dial up connection (so I dont have to try and get around our firewall)

Nice one
