Hello,
could someone help me and tell me what's wrong? what should I do please?
I search the posts for "tip hardwire" and seems like I have similar issues, and I check and apply, but it still does not work.

I have Sun 420R and I can not connect to it, so I hook up the console with my labtop using a serial cable. Usually, I will get a prompt, but this time, all I get a the connected message. The login prompt does not appear.

I connect the serial port of my local PC/workstation to the DB25 Serial A/B port on the back of the Sun using a serial cable (straight through).
Here are my try connection:
1) without a null modem adapter between my laptop and SUN
2) with a null modem adapter.
and below is the communication settings:
Bits per second: 9600
Data bits: 8
Parity: None
Stop bits: 1
Flow Control: Hardware

I still don't see any prompt

I then connect a monitor to the console, and it just flashes with 2 lines, which I am able to read the first line of "can't not open input", and the screen is black again.

Next, I use tip hardwire and I get connect it, I get something as below but don't know how to go on with this because I try with getting the /var/adm/messages file and it just hung there forever.

# tip hardwire -9600 /dev/term/a
connected
~[take] /var/adm/messages

Thanks for the help

Babeo,
What type of workstation are you working on? If you are using the RS232 serial port to a terminal like hyperterm on yor PC or laptop, you will need a null modem adapter or cable between the workstation and PC.

Hi bfitzmai,
My server is Sun Enterprise R420, OS 5.8, my laptop running MS 2000, and I use the serial cable attached with a null modem adapter between the 420 with my laptop.

Actually, there is a strange thing happening:
I try with another laptop and get the hyperterm hung and crashes, I then try with the 2nd laptop, which I know that it works fine before with this Sun, so I don't get the hyperterm crashes, I get message of "connected" but no login prompt. After rebooting the server the 3rd time and connecting with the 3rd laptop, I am able to telnet and connect through serial port.

Then I test by swapping cable, laptop, different port, I will have to reboot the Sun box again, it's a strange thing I have never met before, so I just set the display to monitor and keyboard for the box because I have issue with connecting the laptop through serial port.

If you have any idea why, please let me know.
thanks
