Hi,

I have successfully used Remote Assistance across a network to view another person's screen.

How do you initiate remote control of a PC? Does request come from the person seeking help at the time of sending the invitation? and/or can the person offering help ask for control of the PC from the person seeking help if viewing only is not enough to sort the problem (which it rarely will be)?

Does the person whose PC is being controlled still see everything that the other person is doing? is the viewing "live" ie as it happens? how does the recipient terminate the session if they don't like what's being done?

Please assist.

Regards,
Jay/UK

Remote assistance is by request, you cannot initiate that, but if requested, they can see what you do.
To close, there is a disconnect button where they requested in the first place.

Remote control is another thing. More specific, Remote Desktop (Terminal services like).
Here, you can log in remotely, but the desktop will close for the current user.

The solution is out there. [morning]

You can enable a machine to accept offers for Remote Assistance by doing the following on the client PC: At the Run dialog box type gpedit.msc and click OK. Go to Local Computer Policy>Computer Configuration>Administrative Templates>Remote Assistance. Double click Offer Remote Assistance. Enable the feature and add your domain account. Remember that you need to be an administrator to perform the above procedures.

From the Explain tab of Offer Remote Assistance Properties:
Use this setting to determine whether or not a support person or IT admin (who is termed the "expert") can offer remote assistance to this computer without a user explicitly requesting it first via a channel, e-mail, or instant messenger.

Hi,

Oh, I see. Didn't realise that you can offer Remote Assistance without using the invite, etc dialogs !!

How do I move on from remote viewing of workstation to remote CONTROL of workstation? I believe you have to initiate another request - is this correct, how do you specify what's wanted and who has to initiate?

I await your reply.

Regards,
Jay

If you're looking for complete remote control of another pc, start by looking in XP's Help & Support for Remote Desktop. If you run into problems, just post back.

I forgot to mention, that RD is available only if XP Pro is used for the remote computer.

Hi Smah,

Windows XP is on both PCs.

I thought Remote Desktop was for dialling into your own PC and I believe it blanks the screen being dialled into.

I want to be able to be given control of my colleagues PC but I want them to be able to still see the screen and have the option of taking back control of their PC if they're not happy or wish to.

Please advise how to proceed.

Regards,
Jay/UK

Then that would be remote assistance. See the post above from dcowboysr1. Also, at the computer to be assisted, right click on My Computer, Properties, Remote tab, Remote Assistance Advanced button, check Allow this computer to be controlled remotely.

Other than that, you'll have to look at third party products like vnc.

Hi smah,

Checked in My Computer and the tick box is there.

Jay/UK
