I install Veritas Backup EXEC 9.1 on a file server, and I install remote agents on both another server and a workstation. Then, I do the backup of the server and the workstation each at a time on the file server. The select of backup source of the server or workstation that I want to back up is grey out. Please help. Thanks a lot.

I installed remote agent success, but when I do the remote backup of the remote server from the Veritas Backup EXEC server, the remote server icon is grey out and I can not select the drives or folders on that remote server. Why is that? What might be wrong with this? Please help!

If you goto help and about backup exec. License information. What to you have...do you have any remote agent license installed (sql, remote agent, exhcange, etc)
Backup Exec require a remote agent license to backup servers. A remote agent license is not needed for workstation.

us2001irvine,

Firstly (sorry to tread on your toes steveot) you will need a remote agent for any remote computer you wish to backup - server or workstation.

On the remote computer you should check to see if the remote agent is installed & if the service is running. To do this just check the services mmc for the "Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Servers" - make sure it is started also.

Let us know what you find :)

Your correct ROLs - you need the remote agent software installed on a remote server or workstation to back it up with 9.x. But on the Media Server you need a Remote Agent License installed to backup any server - it will be greyed out even though you have the service running on the other end. Workstation are free for licensing, there is no need for a remote agent "license" on the media server to installed.

Windows XP is a workstation platform. Like all workstation platforms, such as Windows 2000 Professional, there is no need to purchase a Remote Agent License to back up Windows XP operating systems Technote 245171

Additional license for the Remote Agent is required for each additional server to be backed up. To verify if the Remote Agent license is installed on the media server, follow the steps given below Technote 258984.

Most of the confusion is when we say "remote agent" most assume it the software side that gets installed.

If you have some type of remote agent installed, then verify you can ping the remote server by name...does it resolve to the correct IP? As ROLS states, verify the serivce is running and the beremote.exe on the remote server is version 9.x and not 8.6 or something.

It is license issue, that is, we need to put all those license codes of agents or options on the installation license page. Thanks Steveot, Rols, and all.
