does the remote administration feature of terminal services allow you to work on a server that is not on your WAN but across the internet? Also, what client side software is necessary to conduct such a session?
Your firewall must accept incoming connections on port 3389. If your server does not have an IP on the internet, your firewall has to be able to port forward. Beyond that, you'd just need the terminal services client. That can be found in \\servername\admin$\system32\clients\tsclient\net\win32. Make sure you're using High encryption! Marc Creviere
Thanks! you made mention of using high encryption. I'm just curious, do you beleieve using PCanywhere or remote administration terminal services is better from a security standpoint?
Personally, to be secure I prefer to set up a high encryption VPN connection and do my remote administration over that (using PCAnywhere or TSClient - either are good options). If you use VPN, you get full range of access to your systems without punching extra holes in your firewall - just one for VPN. Marc Creviere
Another option is to use the terminal services advanced client. Then you dont have to install any clients. Internet explorer is the client. Look up TSAC on microsofts web site.
