Hi , I am looking to set up direct dial access to my Office Server and provide access to all directories and applications housed on that server to a select group of people. We run SBS2000 with an ADSL connection.
Is a VPN directly to the Server/router through the ADSL line the best policy or should something else be considered ? I need the staff to access infomation and use Mail from the server as in the office.
What would you recommend - travel is to be considered
Your help greatly appreciated - cheers

A VPN is a good choice, but you should consider security issues. You should have a VPN server in a DMZ that will accept the incoming connections and from there, access your internal network.

Also, you may look up Citrix Metaframe if you have a big load on your Terminal Services. Citrix will also allow Web Based Terminal Services, which means you don't even need a VPN and can access it via the internet. Just make sure you have username and passwords before. :)

Thanks - appreciate the reply.
I think that Citrix metaframe may be out of the ballpark at the moment but i will investigate. As for VPN , i figured it to be the best solution , but a DMZ is a good suggestion , would you have to have a second server or a second firewall ? and what would be required software wise to get it working efficiently ?
cheers

That depends, some firewall support VPNs. It's sometimes a less costly solution then installing an entire server in the DMZ to accept the incoming VPNs.

That is something you need to look up with your current firewall / provider to in order to figure out the next step.
